Every durable and sustainable business needs consistent cash flow.
One of the best ways to do that is through recurring revenue:
- Subscriptions.
- Memberships.
- Retainers.
But here’s the truth:
It’s easy to get the first sale.
It’s difficult to get people to stay willingly.
So many businesses cope with churn by getting more customers.
That’s just pouring more water into a leaky bucket.
Most businesses focus on acquisition.
They don’t design for retention.
They think retention starts after the sale.
It doesn’t.
Retention starts from the first point of contact.
That’s why people still leave despite all the tactics:
- Loyalty programs
- Discounts and promotions
- Email follow-ups
- CRM automations
- Binding contracts
These are tactics.
They may work for a while.
But they are transactional.
They don’t create a deep relationship.
This is not retention.
This is delayed churn.
Leaks are still happening.
So what really causes people to cancel?
The Retention Formula is:
When retention fails, either:
Trust is eroded
Or there is no meaning in staying
Why does trust erode?
Misaligned expectations.
Disappointments.
Most of this happens in how the business delivers.
This is the Execution layer.
And this is where FOCA comes in.
If FOCA fails, people leave.
Trust leaks when promises are not fulfilled.
Over-promising before the sale
Under-delivering after the sale
This is a very common source of trust leak.
Businesses stand out when they overdeliver.
When they do the bare minimum...
People sense the lack of care.
Trust leaks when it feels transactional.
When words and actions don’t match...
When delivery is inconsistent...
Trust leaks.
People don’t trust businesses that say one thing and do another.
People trust those who are real.
When businesses go against the values they preach...
When people sense it's merely a performance to get more sales...
They lose trust quickly.
I'll show you how this plays out in real life...
I recently cancelled a subscription to an AI tool.
My expectation was simple:
Increase productivity and efficiency.
But it didn’t.
After spending more than an hour going back and forth
The tool still couldn’t produce the image I needed.
Words were cut off.
Visuals were missing.
Alignment was off.
I even provided a template.
It still couldn’t follow.
I could have done it in Canva within 30 minutes.
Then I tried a competitor.
It worked immediately.
No friction.
No extra fixing.
I completed my task quickly.
I cancelled my subscription to the first AI tool without hesitation.
There were too many trust leaks:
- Repeated false error flags.
- Inability to follow instructions, which led to wasted time.
- Misalignment with their company values.
I checked my invoices.
I only stayed for 4 months.
And in those 4 months, something felt off.
Once I cancelled…
I felt the tension release in my shoulders.
That’s how important alignment is.
This is FOCA in real life.
When FOCA fails, trust leaks.
When trust leaks accumulate...
Meaning disappears.
And people leave quietly.
Now you understand why people cancel.
Where is your business leaking trust right now?
And how will you fix it?
